2-Door or 4-Door Wrangler: Which One for South Dakota?

2026 Jeep Wrangler 2-door and 4-door parked side by side on a South Dakota gravel road, at Beadle's Chrysler Center

Once somebody has decided they are getting a Wrangler, the next conversation on our lot is almost always the same one. He wants the 2-door, because that is the Jeep he remembers — short, square, the one that looks right with the top off on a July evening. She looks at the back seat and asks where the kids, the two Labs, and the cooler are supposed to go. Then they both notice that every new Wrangler sitting on our lot in Bowdle is a 4-door, and they want to know why.

Short answer: for most families within 60 miles of here, the 4-door is the right Wrangler, and it is not close. The 2-door is the right Wrangler for one particular person — one driver, one dog, a shed to park it in, and a use story that does not involve a boat trailer or a back seat that gets used every week. One of my three Wranglers was a 2-door, so this is not a sales pitch for the bigger one. This guide walks through what you actually give up with two doors, why the lot is all 4-doors and how you order a 2-door anyway, how much room is really in the back, and what "Wrangler Unlimited" means when you see it on a used listing.

What Do You Actually Give Up With a 2-Door Wrangler?

With two doors you give up a usable back seat, most of your cargo space, 1,500 pounds of towing, and two trims — the Sahara and the 392 are 4-door only. What you get back is a shorter, lighter Jeep that turns around on a section-line approach, fits in a smaller shed, and looks the way a Wrangler is supposed to look.

The back seat is the big one. The 2-door has a rear seat, but getting into it means tipping the front seat forward and climbing in past it, and getting a car seat buckled back there is a chore you will do exactly once before you regret it. With that rear seat up, the space behind it holds a duffel and a cooler. It does not hold two Labs, a decoy bag, and a case of shells. Fold the seat and you have a decent cargo floor, but now you are a two-seater. The 4-door has real rear doors, a rear seat three people can sit in, and cargo room behind it with the seat still up. Both bodies get the same full metal doors on quick-release hinges, the same fold-down windshield, and the same full-size spare on the tailgate, so the open-air part of the deal is identical.

Towing is the other hard number. Properly equipped with the Trailer Tow and Aux Switch Group, a 2-door is rated for 2,000 pounds and a 4-door for 3,500. That 1,500-pound gap is the difference between a small aluminum boat and a 16-foot fishing boat with a full livewell, and our towing post walks through what actually fits under each rating. On the road, the shorter wheelbase is honest about what it is: the 2-door feels busier on washboard gravel and moves around more in a crosswind on Highway 12, while the 4-door tracks calmer. Neither one rides like a Grand Cherokee, but the 4-door is the better long-haul Jeep.

Why Is Every Wrangler on the Lot a 4-Door, and Can You Still Order a 2-Door?

Every Wrangler on our lot is a 4-door because that is what people in this county buy: dogs, kids, decoys, a boat, and a 40-mile drive to the game on Friday. Yes, you can absolutely order a 2-door from Beadle's Chrysler Center — it is an order-to-spec Jeep here, not a stocking unit, and we build them the way you want them.

Stocking is a bet on what sells, and around Bowdle the 4-door wins that bet every year. The Ranch-Country daily driver wants the rear doors for the grandkids and the hardware-store run. The hunting rig needs the back for the dogs. The lake rig needs the 3,500-pound rating for the boat. When we do get a 2-door, it is usually spoken for before it is washed, and it is usually somebody's "finally" Jeep — the retired rancher or the empty-nester who has wanted the short one since high school and now has no reason not to.

Ordering one is straightforward. The 2026 2-door comes as a Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon, or Rubicon X. You can have the 3.6L V6 with the standard 6-speed manual or the 8-speed automatic, or the 2.0L turbo with the automatic. The Sunrider soft top is standard; the black or body-color Freedom hardtop is optional, and the Dual Top Group gets you both. The Willys gives you the all-terrain tires and the locking rear differential on the short body, which is a very good gravel-and-CRP setup, and the Rubicon puts the 4:1 Rock-Trac, front and rear lockers, sway-bar disconnect, and 33-inch tires on a wheelbase that will squeeze through a slough trail a 4-door has to think about. If you cannot picture the size difference, the two bodies in the photo above are parked side by side for that reason.

Ordering a 2-door: two things to know

First, timing. If you want it for pheasant opener, do not wait until September to start the conversation; ask us for current build and delivery timing on the trim you want, because it changes through the year. Second, spec it like you will keep it. A 2-door is the harder Wrangler to find used around here, so the person who orders one usually holds it a long time. Get the Convenience Group if it will see a winter commute, and think hard about the hardtop before you skip it.

How Much Room Is in the Back of a 4-Door Wrangler?

Enough for two kids and two Labs, but not both at once with a full load of gear. With the rear seat up, the 4-door's cargo area takes two dogs or a weekend's worth of coolers and bags; fold the rear seat flat and it becomes a small station wagon that will swallow a dog crate, a decoy bag, and a case of shells with room for waders on top.

Here is how I would describe it to somebody who has never sat in one. The rear seat is a proper bench: three across for a short haul, two adults comfortably to Aberdeen, and enough legroom that a teenager will not complain. Behind that seat, with it up, you have a tall, square box. It is not as long as the cargo floor in a Grand Cherokee — the spare on the tailgate is the trade — but it is tall, and tall is what a dog crate and a stack of decoy bags want. The tailgate swings out to the side and the rear glass lifts up on its own, so you can toss a bag in over the top without opening the whole gate, which matters when you have a shotgun case in one hand.

Where the 4-door earns its keep is the everyday stuff you do not think about at the dealership. Car seats go in through a real door. Grandparents get in without a gymnastics routine. Feed sacks and a hockey bag load through the back doors instead of over the front seat. On a September dove hunt with the doors and top off — the shot above is what that looks like in a farmyard, not a magazine — the 4-door hauls three buddies and the birds home. If you are weighing the 4-door Wrangler against a Grand Cherokee on interior room and comfort, our Wrangler vs Grand Cherokee post gives the honest answer; the short version is that the Grand Cherokee is the roomier, quieter family SUV, and the Wrangler is the one whose roof comes off. If you want exact cargo figures for a specific unit, ask us and we will pull them for you.

What Is the Difference Between "Wrangler Unlimited" and "Wrangler 4-Door"?

There is no difference. "Wrangler Unlimited" is the name Jeep used for the 4-door Wrangler for years, and used listings — including the ones on our own lot — still carry it. A new 2026 is simply called the Wrangler 4-Door. Same body, same idea.

This trips people up when they are shopping our used inventory next to the new ones. You will see a used Wrangler Unlimited Sport or Unlimited Sahara sitting near a new 2026 Wrangler 4-Door Sport and wonder if the Unlimited is a bigger or different model. It is not. Unlimited means four doors and the longer wheelbase, full stop. If a listing just says "Wrangler" with no Unlimited on an older Jeep, that is the 2-door.

What is different between an older Unlimited and a new 4-door is the equipment, not the shape. Every new 2026 Wrangler, both bodies, gets the 12.3-inch Uconnect touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, full metal doors on quick-release hinges, and Jeep's factory warranty from day one. Whether that is worth the difference over a used Unlimited with some miles on it is exactly the question our new-vs-used post was written to answer, so I will not restate it here.

How to Pick the Right Wrangler Body for Your Place

This is the checklist I run through with people at the desk. It takes about five minutes and it settles the question almost every time.

  1. Count the back seat: if anybody will ride back there more than a couple of times a month — kids, grandkids, hunting partners — you are a 4-door. Stop here.
  2. Load the dogs: one dog and a bag fits a 2-door with the seat folded; two dogs plus gear plus a passenger is a 4-door.
  3. Weigh the trailer: a loaded 16-foot fishing boat or a 2-place enclosed trailer is 4-door territory at 3,500 pounds; a 2-door's 2,000-pound rating covers a small utility trailer or a light aluminum boat.
  4. Measure the shed: the 2-door fits where the 4-door will not, and a Wrangler that lives outside in January is a Wrangler you will enjoy less.
  5. Pick the trim first: if you want a Sahara's full-time Selec-Trac and body-color hardtop, or a 392, that decision made the body decision for you — both are 4-door only.
  6. Decide on the top: hardtop or Dual Top Group for a daily driver, soft top for a three-season rig, on either body.
  7. Buy or order: 4-doors are on the lot now; a 2-door is an order, so tell us the trim, engine, and top and we will quote current build timing.

Worth it if: the 2-door is worth it if it is a one-person or one-couple Jeep, you have a shed for it, nothing heavier than a light utility trailer goes behind it, and you want the short-wheelbase Wrangler you always pictured.
Skip it if: a back seat, two dogs, a boat, or a Sahara or 392 is anywhere in the plan — get the 4-door, which is why every one on our lot is one.

Key Takeaways

  • Two doors cost you a usable back seat, most of the cargo room, 1,500 pounds of towing (2,000 vs 3,500 properly equipped), and the Sahara and 392 trims.
  • Every Wrangler on our Bowdle lot is a 4-door because dogs, kids, and boats are what this county buys; a 2-door is an order-to-spec Jeep, and we will build one for you.
  • The 4-door carries two dogs behind the rear seat or a full gear load with it folded, loads car seats through real doors, and tracks calmer on washboard and in a crosswind.
  • "Wrangler Unlimited" on a used listing is simply the 4-door; the shape is the same as a new 2026 4-Door, and the differences are equipment and warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 2-door Wrangler pull my fishing boat?

A properly equipped 2-door is rated for 2,000 pounds, which covers a light aluminum boat on a single-axle trailer or a small utility trailer. A loaded 16-foot fishing boat with a livewell, gear, and fuel is usually a 4-door job at 3,500 pounds. Both need the Trailer Tow and Aux Switch Group for the hitch and harness, and we can weigh your setup against the rating before you order.

Does the 2-door Wrangler come as a Sahara or a 392?

No. For 2026 the 2-door is offered as a Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon, or Rubicon X. The Sahara, with its full-time Selec-Trac 4x4 and standard body-color hardtop, and the V8 392 are 4-door only. If either of those trims is what you want, the body decision is already made.

Is a used Wrangler Unlimited the same size as a new 4-door Wrangler?

Yes. Unlimited was Jeep's name for the 4-door body, and used listings still use it. A used Wrangler Unlimited Sport and a new 2026 Wrangler 4-Door Sport are the same four-door, long-wheelbase Jeep; what changes between them is equipment like the 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless CarPlay, plus the factory warranty on the new one.

Is the 2-door Wrangler cheaper than the 4-door?

Generally the 2-door is the lower-cost way into a Wrangler at the same trim level, but the gap depends on trim, engine, top, and current incentives, so ask us for current pricing on the exact build. Keep in mind the 2-door is an order here rather than a lot unit, and it is harder to find used, which is part of why the people who buy them tend to keep them.

My Take on 2-Door vs 4-Door

The second of my three Wranglers was a 2-door, and I still think it was the best-looking vehicle I have owned. It turned around on a two-track without a three-point turn, it fit in a shed the 4-door would not, and with the top folded back on a gravel road in July there was nothing better. I also spent two seasons loading a dog over the front seat and leaving a hunting partner at home because there was no room for him and his gear both. When I traded it, I got a 4-door, and I have not gone back.

So here is what I tell people at the desk. If there is any chance the back seat gets used, if two dogs ride along, or if a boat is part of the story, buy the 4-door and do not overthink it — that is why every one on our lot is a 4-door. If it is your Jeep, just yours, with a shed and a single dog and no trailer, order the 2-door in the trim you want and enjoy the fact that you finally got the one you always pictured. Either way, spec the top and the Convenience Group for the winter you actually live in, not the summer you are picturing.

Our 2026 Jeep Wrangler guide covers the rest — trims, engines, winter, and towing — in one place. And if you are near Bowdle, come sit in a 4-door on the lot and tell us how you would spec the 2-door; we will price both so the decision is made with real numbers instead of a guess.

Rubicon vs Bronco Badlands vs 4Runner TRD for Plains Country

Here is the 2027 news that matters for this comparison: the Wrangler Rubicon did not change. Jeep spent the 2027 model year on special editions for the Sport line and a refreshed color chart, and left the Rubicon's Rock-Trac transfer case, heavy-duty axles, front and rear lockers, sway-bar disconnect, and 33-inch tires exactly as they were. So whether a 2027 Rubicon is a better buy than a Bronco Badlands or a 4Runner TRD is not about what is new. It is about which of three very different ideas fits the country between Bowdle and the river. I already wrote the broad Wrangler-versus-Bronco piece for 2026, and it still applies; if you want the whole lineup compared, start with our Wrangler vs Bronco comparison. This post is narrower: none of these three will ever see a rock ledge around here. They will see cattail sloughs in October, drifted section lines in January, a slick boat ramp in May, and 200 miles of highway to the Hills. That is the test I am going to use. 2. CONTENT SECTIONS What Are the Three of Them, Really? The Rubicon is a solid-axle, body-on-frame 4x4 with a removable top and doors and the most hardware Jeep puts under a Wrangler. The Bronco Badlands is a body-on-frame 4x4 with an independent front suspension, a removable roof and doors, and Ford's drive-mode approach. The 4Runner TRD is a body-on-frame wagon with a fixed roof, a rear locker, and a reputation for running forever. One thing to say up front, once: Beadle Auto Group sells the Bronco at Beadle Ford, a few miles from where I am writing this, and we sell the Wrangler here at Beadle's Chrysler Center in Bowdle. You will not get trash talk from me about a truck my family also sells, just the differences, and they are real. Our Ford store wrote its own take, and it is worth reading both. Here is the 2027 Rubicon spelled out, so we are comparing a real truck and not a brochure. The rivals are described in general terms on purpose; I am not going to quote somebody else's numbers and get them wrong. What it is 2027 Wrangler Rubicon Bronco Badlands 4Runner TRD Front suspension Solid Dana 44-class heavy-duty axle Independent front suspension Independent front suspension 4x4 and low range Rock-Trac heavy-duty part-time, 4:1 low range Selectable 4x4 with G.O.A.T. terrain modes Part-time 4x4 with low range Lockers Electronic front and rear, standard; front sway-bar disconnect Front and rear lockers available Rear locker on TRD models Top and doors Removable soft top or hardtop, removable doors, folding windshield Removable roof and doors Fixed roof; doors stay on Tires and clearance 33-inch off-road tires, about 10.8 inches; 35s available (about 12.9 inches) Off-road tires; ask Beadle Ford for current specs All-terrain tires; ask a Toyota dealer for specs Towing (properly equipped) 3,500 lbs on the 4-Door, 2,000 on the 2-Door; Class II hitch standard Comparable light-duty towing; verify with Beadle Ford Light-to-moderate towing; verify with Toyota Transmission choice 6-speed manual standard with the V6; 8-speed automatic optional Manual on some builds; automatic Automatic Sloughs, Gumbo, and Section Lines: Which One Gets Through? For the wettest, softest ground we have, the Rubicon has the most tools: a 4:1 low range, lockers on both axles as standard, and a front sway-bar disconnect that keeps all four tires on uneven ground. The Badlands can be equipped with lockers at both ends and does very well on a two-track; the 4Runner TRD's rear locker handles most gravel and pasture work but leaves it with the fewest tools when it gets truly soft. What a solid front axle buys you here is not rock-ledge articulation, it is the way the whole axle steps over a frozen rut or a washout without changing the geometry under the tire. Independent front suspension, which both the Badlands and the 4Runner use, gives a smoother, more car-like ride on washboard and pavement, and that is not a small thing over 60 miles of gravel. That is the central trade-off in this whole post: the solid axle is tougher and simpler, the independent front is more comfortable, and you cannot have both. The lockers deserve a plain explanation. Open differentials send power to the tire with the least grip, which in a cattail slough is the one already spinning in black muck. A locker forces both tires on that axle to turn together. The Rubicon ships with both and a 4.10 axle ratio behind 33-inch tires, and you engage them with a switch. On the Badlands, front and rear lockers are available, so make sure the one you are looking at actually has them. On the 4Runner TRD you get the rear, which is what most people use most of the time, but there are October mornings on a slough margin where the front one is the difference between driving out and calling somebody with a Ram. Mind the tires as much as the lockers The Rubicon's LT285/70R17 off-road tires are a big part of why it walks out of gumbo, and also why it hums on the highway. The Xtreme 35 package brings about 12.9 inches of clearance, a full-time version of Rock-Trac with a 4.56 ratio, and more noise. Whichever of the three you buy, the tire will matter more on a slough edge than any badge on the fender. 5. IMAGE BREAK Which One Is the Best South Dakota Winter Vehicle? For getting down an unplowed township road, all three will do it and the Rubicon does it with the most margin. For living with it at 20 below, the 4Runner's fixed roof is the quietest and best sealed, the Bronco's removable roof sits in the middle, and the Rubicon's standard soft top should be upgraded to a hardtop before the first cold snap. A removable top is a summer feature with a winter cost. The Rubicon comes standard with the black Sunrider soft top, and a soft top in a January wind is louder, draftier, and slower to warm than a fixed roof. The fix is on the order sheet: spec the three-piece Freedom hardtop, or the Dual Top Group if you want the soft top back for July, and the Rubicon becomes a perfectly livable winter vehicle, with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel standard. The Badlands has the same issue in the same form and the same fix. The 4Runner TRD simply does not have the problem, because its roof never comes off. On traction, the Rubicon's Rock-Trac is a part-time system: two-wheel drive on dry pavement, 4-High for snow and glazed gravel, 4-Low for a drift. There is nothing to think about. The Badlands' G.O.A.T. modes let you pick a slippery setting and let the truck manage things, which some drivers love and some find one more thing to fiddle with. The 4Runner's part-time system works like the Jeep's. Where the Rubicon's lockers earn their keep in winter is the drift across a section line the grader has not touched: engage them and walk through at low range instead of hitting it at speed. Our 2027 Wrangler winter post goes deeper on tops, heat, and which trim's 4x4 system you actually need. Hunting and the Lake: Dogs, Decoys, Doors Off, and the Boat Ramp As a hunting rig, the Rubicon and the Badlands are close cousins, both with removable doors and roof and room for two Labs and a decoy bag; the 4Runner TRD is the conventional wagon with a fixed roof, and for a lot of hunters the easier one to keep gear dry and dog hair contained. For the boat ramp, the Rubicon's 4:1 low range and standard Class II hitch make backing a 16-foot fishing boat down a slick Oahe ramp about as calm as it gets. The doors-off September dove hunt is the Jeep's home turf. Full metal doors come off on quick-release hinges, the two front Freedom panels lift out in about a minute with no tools, and the windshield folds. The Bronco offers its own removable roof and doors, so the open-air experience is on the table there too. The 4Runner does not play this game, and its buyers generally do not miss it; they want the wagon that is sealed up on the way home with a wet dog in the back. Towing is where you keep expectations honest. A properly equipped 4-Door Rubicon tows 3,500 pounds, which covers a 16-foot Lund on a single-axle trailer or a two-place enclosed, and the Class II hitch is already on the truck. The 2-Door is rated for 2,000. Both rivals sit in the light-duty range as well; verify the exact numbers at Beadle Ford or a Toyota store. None of the three replaces the Ram already in your yard for the stock trailer, and as the second vehicle, that is the point. Our Wrangler hunting and Lake Oahe post covers the dogs-and-gear layout and the doors-off-to-doors-on calendar in detail. The Honest Highway and Daily-Driver Answer On the four-hour run to the Hills, the Badlands rides quieter and smoother than the Rubicon, and the 4Runner TRD is quieter than both. The Rubicon on 33-inch off-road tires with a solid front axle is the most honest about being a 4x4 first, and a highway cruiser second. I say this as someone who has driven a Rubicon to Rapid City more times than I can count: you get used to it, and you also notice the difference the first time you ride in a Bronco. A body that stays a little more settled at 75 is the Badlands' real advantage, and the Ford store will tell you the same thing. The 4Runner is a wagon in the old sense, sealed and steady, and the reliability reputation Toyota has built is deserved. Fuel economy on the Rubicon with the V6 automatic lands in the low 20s on the highway, roughly, and the 2.0L turbo does about the same or a hair better; I will let the other two brands state their own figures. Two things the Rubicon has that neither rival matches for the right buyer: a 6-speed manual, still standard with the 3.6L V6 for 2027, and a 2-Door body if you want the short wheelbase and a garage fit. Every 2027 Rubicon also comes with the 12.3-inch Uconnect screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full-size spare on the tailgate, and a 21.5-gallon tank, none of which changed from 2026. If a quiet daily is the priority and the slough hardware is a nice-to-have, I would point you to the Sahara, or to the Grand Cherokee, before I let you overbuy a Rubicon. 5c. HOW-TO How to Compare All Three From Bowdle in One Afternoon Two of the three are sold by the same family within a few miles of each other, so this is a comparison you can do in person instead of on a screen. Write down the three worst places it will go. A specific slough, ramp, and section line in a specific month. Judge everything against those, not a trail video. Drive the Rubicon at Beadle's Chrysler Center first. Put it in 4-Low on the gravel behind the store, cycle the lockers and the sway-bar disconnect, then take it out on Highway 12 and listen to the tires. Drive the Bronco Badlands at Beadle Ford the same day. Confirm the one on the lot has the lockers you want, run it through its G.O.A.T. modes, and do the same highway loop. Sit in a 4Runner TRD with your gear in mind. Fixed roof, wagon cargo, rear locker. If the roof never comes off and the dogs ride inside, it will make its own case. Spec the top for January before you fall for the truck. On the Rubicon that means the hardtop or the Dual Top Group; on the Bronco, ask about the roof; on the 4Runner, you are done. Get pre-qualified and ask for current pricing on the exact build. Trim, top, tires, and tow package all move the number. 5b. QUICK OVERVIEW TABLE Quick Overview: Which One for Which Job? Job 2027 Wrangler Rubicon Bronco Badlands 4Runner TRD Sloughs and soft two-tracks Most tools: 4:1 low, both lockers standard, sway-bar disconnect, 33s Very capable, especially with both lockers specified Capable with the rear locker; fewest tools when it gets soft Drifted section lines Simple part-time 4x4, lockers for the deep drift Snow mode and selectable 4x4 Part-time 4x4 with low range Living with it at 20 below Order the hardtop; heated seats and wheel standard Removable roof, same caveat Fixed roof; quietest and best sealed Hunting rig, doors off Doors, roof panels, and windshield all come off Roof and doors come off Nothing comes off; sealed wagon with the dog inside Boat ramp and light towing 3,500 lbs on the 4-Door, Class II hitch standard, 4:1 crawl on the ramp Light-duty towing; verify at Beadle Ford Light-to-moderate towing; verify with Toyota Highway to the Hills Loudest of the three on 33s; low-20s highway with the V6 automatic, roughly Quieter, smoother ride from the independent front Quietest; wagon steadiness and the reliability reputation Worth it if: the worst place it goes is genuinely soft or deep, you want both lockers and the 4:1 as standard, and doors-off season matters to you. The Badlands fits when you want most of that hardware with a smoother highway ride; the 4Runner TRD fits when a sealed wagon and a long-haul reputation matter more than an open top. Skip the Rubicon if: your Wrangler will mostly see pavement and graded gravel — a Sahara or a Willys does that job for less money and less tire noise. 6. KEY TAKEAWAYS Key Takeaways The 2027 Rubicon's hardware is unchanged from 2026: Rock-Trac 4:1, heavy-duty axles, front and rear lockers, sway-bar disconnect, 33-inch tires, and a standard Class II hitch. For sloughs and soft two-tracks the Rubicon has the most tools as standard; the Badlands can be equipped with both lockers; the 4Runner TRD has a rear locker. The Badlands and the 4Runner ride quieter on the highway thanks to independent front suspension; the Rubicon's solid axle is tougher and simpler on rutted section lines. In winter, order the Rubicon with the hardtop; the 4Runner's fixed roof is the quietest and best sealed of the three. Beadle Auto Group sells the Wrangler in Bowdle and the Bronco at Beadle Ford, so you can drive both the same afternoon. 7. FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Did the 2027 Wrangler Rubicon change compared to 2026? No. The 2027 Rubicon carries the same Rock-Trac 4:1 transfer case, Dana 44-class heavy-duty axles, electronic front and rear lockers, front sway-bar disconnect, 33-inch off-road tires, and engines as 2026. The 2027 changes are special editions on the Sport line and a refreshed color chart. Is a Wrangler Rubicon or a Bronco Badlands better for South Dakota hunting? Both work well. The Rubicon ships with front and rear lockers, a 4:1 low range, and a sway-bar disconnect as standard, which gives it the most tools for slough edges and soft ground. The Badlands can be equipped with lockers at both ends and rides quieter on the highway thanks to its independent front suspension. Beadle Auto Group sells both, so drive each. Can the 4Runner TRD take its top or doors off like a Wrangler? No. The 4Runner TRD is a body-on-frame wagon with a fixed roof and fixed doors. That is a drawback for doors-off hunting season and an advantage at 20 below, where a sealed wagon is quieter and warmer than any removable top. How much can a 2027 Wrangler Rubicon tow for a Lake Oahe boat? A properly equipped 4-Door Rubicon is rated to tow 3,500 pounds, and the Class II hitch is standard on Rubicon. The 2-Door is rated for 2,000 pounds. That covers a typical 16-foot fishing boat on a single-axle trailer; keep the Ram for anything heavier. 8. CONCLUSION My Take on the Rubicon vs Badlands vs 4Runner TRD I have owned three Wranglers, and the Rubicon was the one I kept longest, so take my bias for what it is. Judged on the country we actually drive, the Rubicon has the most hardware already on it: the 4:1 low range, both lockers, and the disconnect are standard, and that matters when the worst place your truck goes is a slough margin in October. The Bronco Badlands is the one I would tell my brother-in-law to drive before he decides, because a quieter highway ride is worth a great deal over four hours. The 4Runner TRD is for the person who never wants the roof off and wants the thing to outlive the loan twice. None of that changed for 2027, and that is the point. Jeep left the Rubicon alone this year, so the truck I am describing is the same one sitting on our lot as a 2026 and the same one you would order as a 2027. If the special editions or a new color are pulling you toward 2027, fine; if it is the hardware you want, buy whichever year is in front of you. Either way, the honest test is not a trail rating. It is your slough, your section line, your ramp, and your January. Our 2027 Jeep Wrangler guide covers the rest of the year, and our 2027 trim comparison will tell you whether a Willys or a Sahara does your job for less than a Rubicon. Stop in at Beadle's Chrysler Center in Bowdle and we will put you behind the wheel; then drive down the road and try the Bronco. We are fine with that. 9. 2027 Wrangler Trims: What Changed in the Lineup

If you already know your way around a Wrangler window sticker, here is the 2027 trim news in one breath: three special editions come in (Rewind, California Edition, Smoky Mountain), two go out (the 85th Anniversary Edition and the Willys 41), and the seven core trims underneath them, Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, Rubicon X, and 392, carry over with the same transfer cases, axles, lockers, tires, and tops they had in 2026. Nothing that matters on a drifted section line moved an inch. That is good news if you were waiting to see whether the hardware would get shuffled, and it means this post can be short on repetition. I wrote the full trim-by-trim hardware walk in our 2026 Wrangler trim guide, and every word of it still applies. What you get here is the 2027 lineup change, the carryover ladder condensed to what each rung actually buys you on our roads, the Rubicon-versus-Sport question, the 392 answer, and a straight pick for each job around Bowdle. 2. For 2027 the 4-Door adds Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain on the Sport line, the 2-Door adds the California Edition, and the 85th Anniversary Edition and Willys 41 retire with the 2026 model year. The core trims are identical year to year. The way to read a Wrangler lineup is to separate the trims from the editions. A trim changes the hardware: which transfer case, which axles, which tires, which top comes standard. An edition changes how a trim looks: wheels, decals, colors, badges, an interior touch. All three of the new 2027 editions sit on the Sport line, so under the Rewind's retro styling, the California Edition's appearance package, or the Smoky Mountain's hood decal and smoky-black wheels, you have a Sport with Command-Trac and the 2.72:1 low range. That is not a knock. It just means you pick the edition for the look and the trim for the job, and for 2027 those are two separate decisions. The contents of the three new packages, and whether any of them is worth the money over a plain Sport S, get their own treatment in our 2027 special editions post. Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara: What Each Rung Adds for Our Roads Read the 2027 ladder as hardware and it is simple. Sport and Sport S share Command-Trac part-time 4x4 on all-season tires. Willys keeps Command-Trac but adds a locking rear differential and all-terrain tires. Sahara swaps to Selec-Trac full-time 4x4 and a body-color hardtop. Rubicon is a different truck underneath, which gets its own section below. Command-Trac is a proper part-time system: two-wheel drive on dry pavement, 4-High for gravel and snow, 4-Low with the 2.72:1 reduction for a boat ramp or a soft two-track. It is plenty for most of what this county throws at you. The Sport S adds convenience and appearance content on the same hardware; ask us for the exact list, because it is not where the capability lives. The Willys is where the capability changes on the Sport line: the rear locker means both back tires pull when one is in slough mud or on a glazed patch, and the all-terrain tires bite in gumbo and wet grass where an all-season slides. That is why I keep calling the Willys the hunter's value pick. The Sahara is the comfort rung. Selec-Trac is full-time 4x4 with a 4-Auto setting you can leave engaged on pavement, so when Highway 12 is dry in one stretch and glazed in the next, you are not reaching for the lever. It also comes standard with the body-color three-piece hardtop, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, on 18-inch all-season tires. If the Wrangler will be the daily that also does Aberdeen trips, that is the trim I point people to first. 2027 Trim 4x4 system Rear diff and tires Standard top Heated seats and wheel Sport / Sport S Command-Trac part-time, 2.72:1 low Open; 245/75R17 all-season Black Sunrider soft top Available (Convenience Group) Willys Command-Trac part-time, 2.72:1 low Locking rear; 245/75R17 all-terrain Black Sunrider soft top Available (Convenience Group) Sahara (4-Door only) Selec-Trac full-time, 4-Auto, 2.72:1 low Open; 255/70R18 all-season Body-color 3-piece hardtop Standard Rubicon / Rubicon X Rock-Trac heavy-duty part-time, 4:1 low Front and rear lockers; LT285/70R17 (33-inch) off-road Black Sunrider soft top Standard 392 (4-Door only) Rubicon-class heavy-duty 4x4 Lockers; 35-inch tires Body-color hardtop Standard Every rung gets the same things you actually live with: full metal doors on quick-release hinges, a windshield that folds, a full-size spare on the tailgate, a skid plate under the fuel tank, the 12.3-inch Uconnect screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 21.5-gallon tank. The 3.6L V6 with the 6-speed manual is standard from Sport through Rubicon, with the 8-speed automatic optional; the 2.0L turbo is automatic only. None of that changed for 2027. 5. IMAGE BREAK What Does a 2027 Rubicon Have That a Sport Does Not? A different drivetrain. The 2027 Rubicon carries Rock-Trac heavy-duty part-time 4x4 with a 4:1 low range instead of 2.72:1, Dana 44-class heavy-duty front and rear axles, electronic lockers at both ends, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, a 4.10 axle ratio, 33-inch off-road tires, extra underbody protection, and a Class II hitch as standard. All of it is unchanged from 2026. On a real day: the 4:1 low range lets you walk out of a cattail slough at a crawl with the engine barely above idle, which is how you keep from digging in. The front locker is the difference between spinning one front tire on a glazed creek-crossing climb and having both pull. The sway-bar disconnect lets the front axle droop over a washout or a frozen rut without lifting a tire. The 33s give you about 10.8 inches of clearance, versus roughly 10 on a Sport, and the Xtreme 35 package stretches that to about 12.9 inches on 35-inch tires with a 4.56 ratio and a full-time version of Rock-Trac. The Rubicon X is a Rubicon with more content on the same hardware. The honest other side: on 33-inch off-road tires the Rubicon hums on pavement, and the Hills run is louder than in a Sahara on its 18s. If the toughest thing your Wrangler will do is a drifted township road and a gravel driveway, a Willys does that with money left over. If it will spend October in sloughs and river-bottom timber, the lockers and the 4:1 earn their keep. The 2027 editions do not close this gap A Rewind, California Edition, or Smoky Mountain looks the part, but it is a Sport underneath: Command-Trac, 2.72:1, open differentials, all-season tires. If the reason you are shopping is lockers, the sway-bar disconnect, and 33s, the answer for 2027 is the same as it was for 2026, and it is spelled Rubicon. Is the 392 Still in the 2027 Lineup? Yes. The Wrangler 392 continues for 2027 on the 4-Door only, with the 6.4L V8 rated at 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic, Rubicon-class heavy-duty 4x4 with lockers, 35-inch tires, and a body-color hardtop as standard. Every fall somebody hears it is the last year, and every fall I get to say it is on the 2027 order sheet. Where it sits in the ladder is easy to state: it is the top rung, and it is the only trim where the engine is the point. A properly equipped 4-Door tows 3,500 pounds no matter which engine is under the hood, so the 392 pulls exactly what a Sport pulls. Fuel economy is in the mid-teens, roughly. What it buys you is a V8 sound on a July evening and a Rubicon's hardware underneath it, and I have watched more than one retired rancher decide that was reason enough. If you are trying to decide whether a 392 or a Rubicon is the right top-of-the-ladder buy, the Rubicon with the V6 or the 2.0L turbo does every bit of the hunting and lake work for a good deal less fuel. Buy the 392 because you want it, not because a job needs it. And for anyone still asking: there is no plug-in hybrid Wrangler offered for 2027, same as 2026. Which 2027 Trim for Which Job Around Bowdle? Straight picks, no hedging: gravel and town, a Sport S with the Convenience Group; hunting rig on a budget, the Willys; the daily that also does winter highway trips, the Sahara; sloughs, ramps, and river bottom, the Rubicon; the one you always promised yourself, the 392. The gravel-and-town buyer, often the second vehicle in a Ram household, is served completely by a 4-Door Sport S. Add the Convenience Group for heated seats, a heated wheel, automatic climate control, and remote start, and put a hardtop on it if it will sit outside in January. If a Rewind or Smoky Mountain look appeals to you, that is where those editions belong. The pheasant hunter who wants the most bite per dollar should go Willys, order the Dual Top Group so the soft top comes off for dove season and the hardtop goes on before deer opener, and stop there. The ranch-country daily, the one that hauls kids 40 miles to a game and runs to the vet and the elevator, should be a Sahara: 4-Auto, the hardtop and heated seats already on it, and the quietest tire of the bunch. The buyer whose Wrangler will spend fall in cattail sloughs and spring backing a boat down a slick ramp is a Rubicon buyer, and the standard Class II hitch is a nice bonus for the 4-Door's 3,500-pound rating. The 392 is for the person who has done the math on fuel and does not care. Ask us for current pricing on any of them; I would rather quote you the real number than publish one that is wrong by the time you read it. 5c. HOW-TO How to Pick a 2027 Wrangler Trim in Six Steps This is the order I walk people through at the desk, and it works whether you are ordering a 2027 or comparing it against a 2026 on the lot. Name the worst place it will go. A gravel driveway in a drift, a boat ramp, or a cattail slough in October. That single answer sorts Sport S from Willys from Rubicon faster than any brochure. Decide whether you will ever leave it in 4x4 on pavement. If the answer is yes, that is Selec-Trac and that is a Sahara. If you are fine shifting in and out, Command-Trac or Rock-Trac is fine. Settle the locker question. Rear only is the Willys. Front and rear with the sway-bar disconnect and 4:1 low range is the Rubicon. Neither is the Sport. Pick the top for January, not July. Soft top standard on Sport, Willys, and Rubicon; hardtop standard on Sahara and 392; the Dual Top Group if you want both. Add the edition last, if at all. Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain change how a Sport looks, not what it does. Choose one after the hardware is settled. Get pre-qualified and check the lot before you order. A 2026 with the same trim, engine, and top is the same truck, and it might already be sitting in Bowdle. 5b. QUICK OVERVIEW TABLE Quick Overview: 2027 Wrangler Trims at a Glance Trim Worth it if Skip it if Sport / Sport S Gravel, town, and a drifted driveway are the whole job; you want one of the 2027 editions You will be in slough mud or on a slick ramp with any regularity Willys Hunting rig on a budget; you want a rear locker and all-terrains without paying for Rubicon You need front and rear lockers or a hardtop standard Sahara Daily driver with winter highway miles; you want 4-Auto, the hardtop, and heated seats included You want a locker or a 2-Door; the Sahara is 4-Door only Rubicon / Rubicon X Sloughs, river bottom, boat ramps; you want both lockers, 4:1 low range, and 33s Most of your miles are highway and you would rather have the quieter tire 392 You want the V8 and have made peace with mid-teens fuel economy You are buying for capability or towing; a Rubicon does the same work Worth it if: you choose the trim for the worst road it will see and add an edition only for the look. Skip it if: you are ordering a 2027 edition because you think it adds hardware — it does not, and a 2026 Willys or Rubicon on the lot may be the better buy. 6. KEY TAKEAWAYS Key Takeaways 2027 lineup change: Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain arrive on the Sport line; the 85th Anniversary Edition and Willys 41 retire. Core trims are unchanged. Sport and Sport S run Command-Trac on all-seasons; Willys adds a rear locker and all-terrains; Sahara adds full-time Selec-Trac, a hardtop, and heated seats. Rubicon is a different drivetrain: Rock-Trac 4:1, heavy-duty axles, front and rear lockers, sway-bar disconnect, 33s, and a standard Class II hitch. The 392 continues for 2027 on the 4-Door with the 470-horsepower V8; it tows the same 3,500 pounds a properly equipped V6 4-Door does. Pick the trim for the worst road it will see; pick the edition for the look. No plug-in hybrid Wrangler is offered for 2027. 7. FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Did any 2027 Wrangler trim get new 4x4 hardware? No. Command-Trac on Sport, Sport S, and Willys, Selec-Trac on Sahara, and Rock-Trac with lockers on Rubicon and Rubicon X all carry over from 2026 unchanged, along with the axles, tires, and tops. The 2027 changes are the three new special editions and the two retired ones. Is a 2027 Smoky Mountain or Rewind more capable than a Sport S? Not in the drivetrain. Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain are styling and appearance packages on the Sport line, so they use Command-Trac part-time 4x4 with the 2.72:1 low range and open differentials. For a rear locker you want the Willys; for both lockers, the Rubicon. Which 2027 Wrangler trims come with heated seats and a heated steering wheel? Standard on Sahara, Rubicon, and 392. On Sport, Sport S, and Willys they come in the Convenience Group, which also adds automatic climate control and remote start. Can I get a 2027 Sahara or 392 in a 2-Door? No. For 2027 the 2-Door is offered as Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon, Rubicon X, and the California Edition. Sahara and 392 are 4-Door only, and the 4-Door also carries the 3,500-pound tow rating versus 2,000 for the 2-Door when properly equipped. 8. CONCLUSION My Take on the 2027 Wrangler Trim Lineup Three Wranglers in, I have owned a Sport, a Sahara, and a Rubicon, and each one was right for the life I had at the time. What I like about the 2027 lineup is that Jeep did not muddy that decision. The rungs mean what they meant last year: Sport for gravel and town, Willys for the locker on a budget, Sahara for the daily, Rubicon for the sloughs. The new editions are a fresh coat of paint on the bottom rung, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you know it going in. So pick the trim by the worst road your Wrangler will see, not the best one. Then, if a Rewind or a Smoky Mountain makes you smile, put it on a Sport S and enjoy it. And if you land on a Willys or a Rubicon, check what is sitting on our lot in Bowdle before you order, because the 2026 version is the identical truck and it might be home this week instead of this winter. Our 2027 Jeep Wrangler guide pulls the whole year together, editions, colors, and ordering included. 2027 Wrangler in a South Dakota Winter

Here is the honest starting point on the 2027 Wrangler and winter: the parts that matter when it is fifteen below and the township road has not seen a plow did not change. Same Command-Trac on the Sport and Willys, same Selec-Trac on the Sahara, same Rock-Trac and lockers on the Rubicon, same tops, same heated-seat packaging. What Jeep changed for 2027 is the trim list (three new editions in, two out) and the color chart. So if you are reading this in the fall, trying to decide what to order for a January delivery, this is not a review. It is a build list. I have owned three of these and scraped frost off more than one soft top at six in the morning, so I have opinions. If you want the long version of how a Wrangler actually behaves in a South Dakota winter — the soft top at 20 below, the 4x4 systems explained, which tires do what on ice — that lives in our 2026 Wrangler winter guide, and every word of it applies to the 2027. This post is the shorter, ordering-focused companion: which boxes to check on a 2027 so the first cold snap does not catch you with the wrong top and no heated seats. 2. TOP CTA Search Wrangler Inventory Get Pre-Qualified 3. TABLE OF CONTENTS On This Page What changed for winter on the 2027 Wrangler? How to spec a 2027 Wrangler for a Bowdle January 4. CONTENT SECTIONS What Changed for Winter on the 2027 Wrangler? Honestly, Nothing Nothing in the winter hardware changed for 2027. Engines, transmissions, transfer cases, axles, tops, tires, and the cold-weather packaging all carry over from 2026 exactly as they were. What did change is around the edges. The 2027 lineup adds three special editions on the Sport line — Rewind, a retro-styled package; California Edition, an appearance package; and Smoky Mountain, with its hood decal and smoky-black wheels — and retires the 85th Anniversary Edition and the Willys 41. The color chart shuffles too, with some carryovers (Bright White and Black continue), some new, and some gone. None of that affects whether the thing starts at 20 below or gets you through the drift on the section line south of Bowdle. The 3.6L V6 with the six-speed manual or the eight-speed automatic, the 2.0L turbo, and the 392's V8 are all still here, and the 4x4 system under each trim is the same one it had last year. The one way the model year genuinely matters to a winter buyer is this: if you are ordering a 2027 instead of buying a 2026 off the lot, you get to choose the winter hardware instead of taking whatever came in on the transport. That is the whole point of the rest of this post. And to answer the question I hear most at the counter — yes, a Wrangler will get you down an unplowed township road when your car will not. Roughly 10 inches of ground clearance on a Sport or Sahara, about 10.8 on a Rubicon with its 33s, and around 12.9 with the 35-inch package means you ride over the packed ridge between the tire tracks instead of pushing it with the bumper. Hardtop, Soft Top, or Dual Top: What to Order for a Bowdle January Order the hardtop. If you also want the top off in July, order the Dual Top Group and store whichever one you are not running. The soft top will survive a winter here, but you will not enjoy it. Here is what each 2027 trim ships with. The black Sunrider soft top is standard on the Sport, Sport S, Willys, and Rubicon. The body-color three-piece Freedom hardtop is standard on the Sahara and the 392. On everything else, a black or body-color hardtop is an option, and the Dual Top Group gets you both. My second Wrangler was a soft-top Sport, and I ran it through one full winter before I gave in. It sealed fine while it was new, but the fabric gets stiff in the cold, ice builds on it, the cabin is drafty at highway speed on the run to Aberdeen, and the wind noise at 65 wears on you by February. It is not dangerous. It is just a trade you should make on purpose, not by accident. The hardtop fixes all of that and keeps most of the open-air appeal, because the two front Freedom panels lift off in about a minute with no tools. On a warm afternoon in March you can pull them, set them in the back, and have them back on before the sun drops. You do not have to give up the whole roof to get the Jeep feeling, and you do not have to wrestle a full top swap in a cold garage. Full metal doors on every trim Every 2027 Wrangler, Sport through 392, comes with full metal doors on quick-release hinges and a windshield that folds. You will not take either off in January, but it matters in winter that they are real doors with real glass and real seals. The doors-off part of the story is a summer feature; the doors-on part is what you live with from November to March. Heated Seats, Heated Wheel, Remote Start: Which 2027 Trims Have Them Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standard on the 2027 Sahara, Rubicon, Rubicon X, and 392. On the Sport, Sport S, and Willys — and on the new Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain packages that sit on the Sport line — you add them with the Convenience Group, which also brings automatic climate control and remote start. Remote start is the item people skip on the order and regret in December. Ten minutes of warm-up while you finish your coffee means a defrosted windshield and a seat that does not hurt to sit on. If you are ordering a Sport-line 2027, check the Convenience Group box; it is the single most-used winter option on any Wrangler I have owned. On the Sahara, Rubicon, and 392, ask us how remote start is packaged on the exact build you want. Every trim also gets the 12.3-inch Uconnect touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, so the map and the weather radar are on the screen without a cord in the way of the heater vents. 2027 Trim Heated Seats and Wheel Standard Top Winter Order Note Sport / Sport S Convenience Group Black soft top Add the hardtop and the Convenience Group Willys Convenience Group Black soft top Same two adds; all-terrains and rear locker already on it Rewind / California Edition / Smoky Mountain Convenience Group Ask us by edition Sport-line hardware; confirm top and heat when you order Sahara Standard Body-color hardtop Winter-ready as it sits; Selec-Trac 4-Auto Rubicon / Rubicon X Standard Black soft top Add the hardtop or Dual Top Group 392 Standard Body-color hardtop Winter-ready as it sits; plan on mid-teens fuel economy 5. IMAGE BREAK Which 4x4 System and Tires for a Drifted Section Line? For most winters around Bowdle, the Command-Trac part-time 4x4 on the Sport, Sport S, and Willys is enough, and the Willys is the one I would order because it adds all-terrain tires and a locking rear differential on the same system. The Sahara's Selec-Trac adds a 4-Auto mode you can leave engaged on pavement that changes from dry to black ice every mile. The Rubicon's lockers are for the drift you probably should have turned around at. Command-Trac is a straightforward part-time system with a 2.72:1 low range: two-wheel drive on dry pavement, 4-High on snow-covered gravel, 4-Low when you are pushing through something deep. It is the same system that has gotten Wranglers through plains winters for decades, and it is unchanged for 2027. Selec-Trac on the Sahara is a full-time system, also 2.72:1, and its 4-Auto setting is the winter feature worth paying for if you commute: it moves power where it is needed without you shifting in and out of four-wheel drive on Highway 12 as the surface changes. The Rubicon and Rubicon X run Rock-Trac, a heavy-duty part-time system with a 4:1 low range, Dana 44-class heavy-duty axles front and rear, electronic front and rear lockers, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, and 4.10 gears (4.56 with the 35s). In winter the lockers matter when one side of the Jeep is on ice and the other is in a drift: lock both ends and all four tires turn together. Nobody needs that on a plowed road. Everybody wants it once a winter on a section line. Tires by trim: the Sport comes on 245/75R17 all-seasons, the Willys on 245/75R17 all-terrains, the Sahara on 255/70R18 all-seasons, and the Rubicon on LT285/70R17 33-inch off-road tires. Honest take: the all-terrain on the Willys is the best factory winter tire of the four for loose snow and washboard gravel. The Rubicon's aggressive off-road tire is excellent in deep snow and mud but is not automatically better on glare ice than the Sahara's all-season. A dedicated set of winter tires beats all of them, and I run a winter set on whatever I own. Every trim carries a full-size spare on the tailgate, which matters more at 20 below on a gravel road than it does anywhere else. 5c. HOW-TO How to Spec a 2027 Wrangler for a Bowdle January If you are ordering rather than buying off the lot, this is the order I would work through the sheet in. It takes ten minutes and saves you a winter of wishing. Pick the trim by the roads you drive: Willys for gravel, pasture, and hunting; Sahara for a daily driver that lives on pavement and highway; Rubicon if you break your own trail. Order the hardtop (or the Dual Top Group) on any trim where the soft top is standard. The Sahara and 392 already come with the body-color hardtop. Add the Convenience Group on any Sport-line trim or edition for heated seats, a heated wheel, automatic climate control, and remote start. Decide on tires now: the Willys all-terrains are winter-ready from the factory; on Sport and Sahara all-seasons, budget for a winter set before the first storm. Add the Trailer Tow and Aux Switch Group if you pull a fish house or a small trailer; a properly equipped 4-Door is rated for 3,500 pounds, a 2-Door for 2,000. Order early: if you want it before pheasant opener or the first real snow, talk to us in late summer and ask about current build timing. 5b. Skip it if: you mostly drive plowed roads and highway — a Willys or Sahara with a hardtop and heated seats handles a normal winter here with money left over for a winter tire set. 6. KEY TAKEAWAYS Key Takeaways The 2027 Wrangler's winter hardware is unchanged from 2026: same 4x4 systems, tops, tires, and cold-weather packaging. Order a hardtop or the Dual Top Group on the Sport, Willys, and Rubicon; the Sahara and 392 already come with one. Heated seats and wheel are standard on Sahara, Rubicon, and 392; the Convenience Group adds them plus remote start on the Sport line and the new editions. The Willys is the winter value: all-terrain tires and a locking rear diff on the same Command-Trac 4x4 as the Sport. The Sahara's Selec-Trac 4-Auto is the pick for a pavement commuter; the Rubicon's lockers are for breaking trail. 7. FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Did the 2027 Jeep Wrangler change anything for cold weather? No. The 4x4 systems, axles, tops, tires, engines, transmissions, and heated-seat packaging all carry over from 2026. The 2027 changes are three new special editions on the Sport line, the retirement of the 85th Anniversary and Willys 41, and a partial color change. Is a soft top usable in a South Dakota winter? Usable, yes. Pleasant, no. The Sunrider soft top seals when it is in good shape, but it is noisier, draftier at highway speed, and collects ice. For a Wrangler you will drive every day from November to March, order the hardtop or the Dual Top Group so you have both. Which 2027 Wrangler trims have remote start? On the Sport, Sport S, Willys, and the new Rewind, California Edition, and Smoky Mountain packages, remote start comes in the Convenience Group along with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and automatic climate control. On the Sahara, Rubicon, and 392, heated seats and wheel are standard; ask us how remote start is packaged on the build you want. Do I need the Rubicon for winter in South Dakota? Not for plowed roads and highway. A Willys with its all-terrains and rear locker, or a Sahara with Selec-Trac 4-Auto and the standard hardtop, handles a normal winter here. The Rubicon's 4:1 low range and front and rear lockers pay off if you break your own trail down unplowed section lines or deal with deep drifts on the regular. 8. CONCLUSION My Take on Ordering a 2027 Wrangler for Winter I like that Jeep left the winter hardware alone for 2027. The Command-Trac, Selec-Trac, and Rock-Trac systems are proven on our roads, the tops are the same tops, and the Convenience Group still puts heated seats and remote start on the Sport line for a reasonable add. The new editions are fun to look at and the color chart moved around, but if you are buying this thing to get to the elevator on a bad morning, none of that is what you are paying for. If I am helping somebody spec a 2027 for a Bowdle winter, my honest advice is a Willys 4-Door with the hardtop and the Convenience Group. It has the all-terrains and the rear locker, it has heat and remote start, and it leaves money for a winter tire set. If they commute on pavement and want to forget about shifting into four-wheel drive, the Sahara with its standard hardtop and Selec-Trac 4-Auto is the easier daily. If they are the type to break trail down a section line before the county gets to it, the Rubicon's lockers are worth every dollar, and I tell them to add the hardtop before they add anything else.
